Reason #15: Scarcity versus Abundance
What’s your default mindset?
Summertime is coming - and this year, we are ready for it! This time last year, the world was so uncertain. The future of our businesses, our communities and the health of our families was in question.
As I look to the future in times of uncertainty, I have to remind myself to choose abundance -- instead of scarcity. I first read about this concept from Garrett Gunderson, in the book Killing Sacred Cows. The context was in terms of financially planning your life -- but it applies to really any decision or your general outlook on life.
Just being aware of these definitions was the first step -- and years later I still find myself having scarce thoughts first. It creeps up in the smallest moments -- what if I’m not enough? What if we can’t afford it? What if I fail?
While the concept of Imposter Syndrome has become really popular these days, I see it more as a mindset default. One you must overcome -- or have a helping hand to see when you’ve defaulted again. It is NOT your fault!
I have clients that consider themselves the CEO of their business, but can’t see the big picture on what is right in front of them. I have clients that have ignored the numbers out of fear -- fear of how “bad” OR good things really are. It’s like they keep playing small to not be disappointed if a true hardship comes along.
I’m choosing abundance. There is plenty out there for all of us. Sometimes we just need to shine a little light on it.
